Rady School of Management at UC San Diego

International Hiring

Rady’s international students demonstrate invaluable insight, managerial experience, and cultural perspective. With their cross-cultural business acumen, language skills and global experience, international students at Rady can contribute to your organization in many ways.

Approximately 33 percent of Rady MBAs are international, representing 12 different countries. Some international students have worked in the United States, while others have  experience leading multi-national and American companies abroad.

International students hold either an F-1 or a J-1 student visa while studying in the United States. Students with either type of visa are permitted to work as summer interns, as well as full-time employees, after obtaining the required employment authorization.

Hiring International Students as Summer Interns

There are no restrictions for international students who work as summer interns in the United States. The student is responsible for completing the necessary paperwork in order to work as a summer intern in the U.S.

They have the option to apply for either Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). Through the CPT program the student can claim the summer internship as a class, for which he/she needs to submit a completed assignment to Rady in September, after the completion of the internship. Applying for the CPT is an easy process for the student and the employer is not involved. Students work directly with the International Center at UC San Diego to process the necessary paperwork.

Hiring International Students as Full-Time Employees

Upon graduation, international students have two options to gain permission to work in the United States. The student either applies for 12-18 months OPT or they apply immediately for an H1-B visa through the BCIS. The H1-B authorizes the student to work in the United States for three years and is renewable for a total of up to six years. In this case, the sponsoring employer needs to assist the student with the application process.

UC San Diego’s International Center can provide additional information on the visa process. Please refer to the International Center’s Web site, http://icenter.ucsd.edu/isso/ for more information.
