Financial Aid
Financial aid is funding provided by the federal and state governments and by the University of California to assist students with their educational expenses. The UCSD Financial Aid Web site provides helpful information, from step-by-step application processes to downloadable forms and frequently asked questions.
Need-Based Financial Aid
All students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can complete and submit your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. UCSD's school code is 001317. Once your FAFSA data has been processed and electronically transferred to the UCSD Financial Aid Office by the FAFSA central processor, you will be notified of your eligibility by the UCSD Financial Aid Office (FAO).
Student Contribution Appeal
Your expected student contribution for the academic year will be based largely on your prior calendar year income. For students who have been working full-time during the prior year, this expected contribution may not accurately reflect your current or projected financial situation as a full-time student. Students falling into this situation are encouraged to complete and submit a student contribution appeal form.
Types of Need-Based Financial Aid:
Graduate Opportunity Grants are University of California funded and do not have to be repaid. You must submit a FAFSA form in order to be eligible for these grants.
Federal Stafford Loan Program
Refer to www.edfund.org (click-on "Students & Parents") for additional information.
There are two categories of the Federal Stafford Loan Program. First, there are subsidized loans for which the government pays your accruing interest while in school, grace and authorized deferment periods. Second, there are unsubsidized loans for which you are responsible for paying your accruing interest while in school, grace and authorized deferment periods. The Federal Stafford Loan eligibility is not credit-based, but instead is need-based.
